In Ottoman Turkey, weaving patterns and techniques changed in the early sixteenth century after conquests in Persia and Egypt. Anatolia had been known for carpets with stylized animal and geometric designs, but with these new cultural contacts, carpets designed around a central medallion and with flowing saz style vegetation

This is an extraordinary carpet that whilst having a very definite curvilinear design

For the Qum designers have adapted or created designs in a style which are distinctively their own whilst being inspired by designs from other areas

there is the presence of camels (meaning wealth – perhaps oil wells would be more immediately understood today as carrying this meaning) and the inscription which promises at the end of endurance more soulful and spiritual rewards such as unity and loyalty
